Sri Lanka’s southern coast is the place most travellers fall for first — and the one they talk about long after they fly home. Ramparts glowing gold at sunset, fishermen perched on stilts above the surf, and warm, clear water from one cove to the next.
Begin inside Galle Fort, a living UNESCO World Heritage town first built by the Portuguese in the 1500s and fortified by the Dutch from 1649. Its lanes are full of boutique cafés, gem dealers and old merchant houses with deep verandas. As the sun drops, everyone — locals, families, cricketers — drifts up onto the ramparts to watch the sky turn orange behind the lighthouse.
Follow the coast east and the beaches grow quieter. Unawatuna’s sheltered bay is made for a first swim, Jungle Beach hides in a cove of trees, and along Koggala and Ahangama the famous stilt fishermen still balance above the waves at dawn and dusk.
At Mirissa the ocean opens up. From December to April, boats head out at first light in search of blue whales — the largest animals that have ever lived — and pods of spinner dolphins. Back on land, Coconut Tree Hill is the island’s most photographed sunset, and for good reason. Further west, Hikkaduwa’s reef is home to sea turtles you can snorkel beside.
Picture this…
Imagine it: your last evening on the island. You are sitting on the warm stone of Galle’s ramparts with a king coconut in your hand, the lighthouse turning gold, the sound of a cricket match drifting up from the green below. You don’t want to be anywhere else.
